About Our Name:
BE THE WATER
To truly understand this phrase, one should know what the Zen masters were trying to say when they said to “BE” something.
The Zen philosophy was created to teach a “special transmission” between all things in the universe – be they living or not – in order to have a communication that is based on experience and not just to “stand upon words”. In other words, Zen was established to create a way of communication that was beyond words, one that concentrated on direct experience between two things, instead of relying upon creeds, chants, scriptures, and other texts to pass on knowledge of the universe.
Bringing this idea to the competitive swimmer basically means: “…in order to master you being in (or going through) the water, you must first understand the water.”
In Zen, the highest form of understanding something is to BE it, or to at least be in a state of mind where you are as close to existing as this thing does, which requires knowledge of this particular thing and you attempting to communicate with it by your state of mind.
Sure, you may know how to swim in the water, but do you truly know and understand the substance that you are swimming through?
Do you think that by understanding and “knowing” the water - its characteristics, its properties, its resistance, its absorbation rate, its surface tension, its qualities, it chemical balance, its reaction to movement and so on - that this knowledge might help you become a better swimmer?
If you answered "YES", then you have taken your first step to being a Zen master.....and a swimmer who knows the water!
About Our Company:
BeTheWater was started by Chris Meservey in 2001 to service needed items for his Bubble Swim School clients, a school that has been teaching Las Vegans to swim for over 40 years. The store grew to supply many of the high school and club teams in the Las Vegas area by great prices and personality. After having his 5th child born in 2009, and having three of those attending Arbor View High School where he teaches – Chris decided to go into ‘semi-retirement’ so he could enjoy these precious years with his kids before they leave the nest.
The direction and management of the store was then transferred to David Perkins, a three time All American swimmer from the great state of Texas, and as a local swim coach at Legacy High School, truly appreciated the commitment Chis made to having the lowest prices, friendly customer service, and a flexible way to get complicated deals done easily (and if you are a swim coach who has made many team orders, then you know what I’m talking about).
David’s vision is simply to add a few elements to the already successful formula that has made BeTheWater a wonderful place to shop:
- Somehow take this “FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SWIM STORE” onto the world-wide-web, while maintaining our commitment to personal care and the feeling of complete satisfaction for each and every client.
- Offer UNIQUE DESIGNS (for example, specially designed towels, swim caps, warm-ups, etc) so that teams may have their own distinctive and impressive look.
- Offer Fundraising programs via our products, services, and ideas, TO ASSIST TEAMS IN RAISING MONEY in an era of cutbacks and layoffs
If you are reading this, then obviously you have not only found our site, but are one of those few special people who want to know something about the people you are doing business with - and we appreciate that…!
Now let us know something about YOU - what do you want in an online site? What do you want that is not here? What questions or concerns do you have about any aquatic product.....or with swimming itself?
We want to be here for more than just to sell you something - as our name implies in the Zen sense, we want to BE a store, YOUR store, and give you that extra consideration, care, and attention which defines excellent customer service.
Sincerely,
David |
